What is a Start-up Visa Program (SUV)?

The Federal Government of Canada launched the Start-Up Visa Program (SUV) as a pilot project on April 1, 2013. After five years, it was announced as a federal permanent immigration program on April 1, 2018. Through this fast-track federal immigration program, applicants can directly submit their immigration applications to the federal government and obtain permanent residency in one step. The program aims to attract innovative entrepreneurs who can establish their start-ups in Canada with support from designated organizations.

Who are Eligible?

  1. Age: No specific age requirement (Age range 23 – 60 can strengthen your application)
  2. Education: High school graduate or above. However relevant experience in entrepreneurship, business management, or a specific industry can demonstrate your ability to successfully run a startup. 
  3. Language Requirements: Must achieve Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 in listening, reading, writing, and speaking (English or French), with results from an approved language test.
  4. Background Checks: Provide proof of no criminal record and pass a medical examination.
  5. Letter of Support: Obtain a letter of support from a designated organization that has approved your business plan.

What are the preferred Industries?

  1. Business Type: The startup must operate in an innovative sector with growth potential. Common industries include:
    o  Technology (software, apps, AI)
    o  Health care and biotechnology
    o  Clean technology and renewable energy
    o  E-commerce and retail
    o  Agri-tech and food innovation
  2. Market Potential: The business idea should have a viable market and show potential for scaling and creating jobs in Canada.
  3. Support from Designated Organizations: To qualify for the visa, the startup must receive support from a designated organization (venture capital fund, angel investor group, or business incubator).

What is the Application Process?

The processing time for the SUV (Special Immigrant Visa) can vary significantly, typically ranging from 12 to 40 months, depending on the specific case and the immigration officer handling it.
